Holy cannoli is this going to be a great week at the box office!
The Rite
Anthony Hopkins is back and looking as spectacular as ever in this horror film based on actual events. The Vatican starts a new school devoted to teaching seminary students how to perform exorcisms. Hopkins is a priest who takes one of the students under his wing and proves to him that demonic possession is very real and more common than one would guess. Could this be the new "Exorcist"? Well, that's probably one of the most difficult movies to out-do so I would have to guess that this movie is probably not better but it will certainly be fascinating. It doesn't look as scary as "The Exorcist" but it seems to involve more drama than horror and we all know that these two genres can compliment each other as good as a great glass of wine and some fine cheese.
The Mechanic
Jason Statham and Donald Sutherland star in this action/drama. Statham's character named Bishop as a highly trained assassin determined to take revenge for the murder of his friend. It is directed by Simon West who is also responsible for the filming of Black Hawk Down, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This movie might be for you if you're into action movies with decent acting. The reason why I am not interested in this film is due to the directing. I must say that I'm not a huge fan of jittery camera shots that flash back and forth between scenes as it seems like they could create enough special effects to make the raw action look good enough. Jason Statham has certainly seemed to make a name for himself with the Crank films.

Frankie & Alice
Halle Berry takes a stab at a psychological drama as a woman with multiple personality disorder. She struggles to function in her day to day life while her conflicting personalities keep setting her back. As if having this dissociative disorder were not enough, one of her personalities is racist. This film ought to be an interesting character study if nothing else. We've seen movies about MPD before but the fact that one of the characters personalities in prejudice makes us curious as to how in the world she will be able to cope and what extra problems this character could bring her way. Halle Berry is one of the film's producers and it is directed by Geoffrey Sax.
The Other Woman
This movie looks great. Not only do we have Natalie Portman as the lead character, the plot seems so intricate that it just can't be bad. Portman plays a role similar to her own as a Harvard grad but unlike her real life, she is newly married to a New York lawyer and gains a new stepson. She becomes pregnant but loses her child and in turn tries desperately to relate to her new stepson. This becomes a great challenge and the fact that her husband's ex-wife is constantly meddling in their lives just adds fuel to the fire. This is also a new role for Portman as we are not used to seeing her as a mother figure. I have every shred of confidence that she will pull this off just wonderfully.
The Roommate
I'm not too sure about this one. It might be okay if you are a college student at the theater with your own roommates looking for two hours of mediocre entertainment on a Thursday night. It's simple entertainment that should be fairly entertaining when watched for face value. Don't expect a deep psychological plot and do expect some naked college chicks. This is film is about a college Freshman who becomes dangerously obsessed with her roommate. The Roommate stars beautiful new actress Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester of "Gossip Girl". I think I'll wait for video on this one.
